Though August can be hot and sultry inspiring lazy days in hammocks, it is also harvest season. An ancient festival of first fruits is celebrated early in the month. All around us berries are ripening on bushes and vines, fields are beginning to overflow with zucchini and melons and various crops are coming to fruition. It’s definitively a time to feel gratitude for this bounty as well as for other abundance in our lives.

Ahhh…fickle April! One minute the sun is coaxing tulips to unfold their petals in whirls of brilliant color, and the next minute you’re dashing for cover from a sudden downpour. Blessed hours of peace in the garden followed by wild tempests tossing everything untethered aloft—that’s April—which makes it an ideal time to study contrasts in your own life and environment.

Has this happened to you yet—you notice the time and it’s late afternoon or even early evening and you glance outside, only to be surprised that’s there is still some light in the sky. It’s always such a delight to witness evidence that spring really is on the way. While each day has its own inherent beauty, as winters sputters out, it’s difficult not to yearn for more warmth and light.

The descent into winter is brightened by the awareness that once we pass the solstice, each day gains more light. Though it is the darkest time of the year, the light has already returned. Hope is once again renewed as the Wheel of the Year turns.
